Riverview Park, Pittsburgh, PA (USA)

collaboration with Sans façon


A public artwork consisting of an ionic column from the façade of the Allegheny Observatory, carved directy into a 200-year old wind fallen red oak tree;

brass markers and a woodblock printed map identifying the park’s most significant trees; an ongoing initiative to collect and propagate their seeds;

and an edition of forestry tools, each embedded with a slice of an iron meteorite, that have been gifted to the caretakers of the park to be used in future plantings that expand the forest canopy.

Collaborators and partners include the Riverview Park Rangers, City of Pittsburgh Forestry & Public Works, Tree Pittsburgh, The Allegheny Observatory, and the Friends of Riverview Park. On-site millwork by Pittsburgh Urban Tree, handtool carving by Fredy Huaman Mallqui, carving assistance from Brandon Barber, Dan Yates & Evan Miller, metalsmithing by Glen Gardner, printmaker Li Luijiang, papermaker Katy DeMent, musician Florian TM Zeisig, and filmmaker Michael Pisano.

Commissioned by the City of Pittsburgh Department of City Planning for Art in Parks with a RADical ImPAct Grant from the Allegheny Regional Asset District (RAD).
